1RU 96 Fibre MTP/MPO Enclosure

The RapidConnect 96 Fibre MTP MPO Enclosure provides a compact and modular solution for high-density fibre connectivity. With capacity for up to 96 fibres in only 1RU, the enclosure helps customers maximise valuable rack space. Furthermore, its modular cassette system supports both immediate network requirements and future expansion.

The enclosure accepts up to four MTP/MPO cassette modules. Therefore, customers can install the capacity they need today and add further cassettes as demand increases. In addition, factory-terminated cassettes connect directly to compatible MTP or MPO trunk cables. As a result, the complete system supports faster and more predictable fibre deployment.

RapidConnect cassettes are available with MTP® Elite or low-loss MPO rear connections. Meanwhile, LC or SC adapters can provide the required front presentation. Consequently, Anderson Corporation can configure the enclosure around each customer’s fibre type, connector platform, capacity and network architecture.

High-Density Fibre Connectivity in 1RU

Rack space is valuable in data centres, telecommunications facilities and enterprise communications rooms. Therefore, fibre infrastructure must deliver sufficient capacity without consuming unnecessary rack units.

The RapidConnect E196P enclosure supports up to 96 fibres within a compact 1RU format. As a result, customers can consolidate high-fibre-count connections while maintaining structured front and rear access. Moreover, the enclosure creates a clear transition between multi-fibre backbone trunks and equipment-facing patch leads.

The enclosure is suitable for:

  • Data centres
  • Telecommunications facilities
  • Enterprise communications rooms
  • Campus networks
  • Colocation environments
  • Main distribution areas
  • Intermediate distribution areas
  • High-density cross-connects
  • Network expansions
  • Equipment migrations

Although the enclosure provides substantial capacity, customers do not need to populate every cassette position initially. Instead, they can add modules as their network grows. Therefore, the same enclosure can support both a smaller initial deployment and a complete 96-fibre installation.

Key Product Features

The RapidConnect E196P combines high fibre density with modular flexibility. Moreover, its accessible rack-mount design helps simplify installation, patching and future network changes.

Key features include:

  • Capacity for up to 96 fibres

Together, these features create a flexible fibre management platform. Consequently, the enclosure can support new network installations, equipment upgrades and planned infrastructure expansion. Furthermore, Anderson Corporation can supply the associated cassettes, trunks, patch leads and cleaning products required for a complete solution.

Four-Cassette Modular Design

The enclosure contains four physical cassette positions. Therefore, customers can configure its capacity according to their current network requirements.

A fully populated 96-fibre installation typically uses four 24-fibre cassette modules. However, customers can install fewer modules when full capacity is not immediately required.

Installed cassettes Maximum fibre capacity
1 × 24-fibre cassette 24 fibres
2 × 24-fibre cassettes 48 fibres
3 × 24-fibre cassettes 72 fibres
4 × 24-fibre cassettes 96 fibres

For example, an installation may begin with one 24-fibre cassette. Later, a second cassette can increase the available capacity to 48 fibres. Subsequently, third and fourth cassettes can expand the same enclosure to 72 or 96 fibres.

As a result, customers can align their initial installation with current demand. Moreover, the remaining cassette positions can support planned growth without consuming another rack unit. Therefore, the modular enclosure provides both immediate efficiency and longer-term flexibility.

12-Fibre and 24-Fibre Rear Connections

Each 24-fibre cassette can use either two 12-fibre rear connections or one 24-fibre rear connection. Therefore, the enclosure can support different MTP/MPO trunk cable architectures.

A fully loaded enclosure can provide:

  • Up to eight 12-fibre MTP/MPO rear connections across four cassettes; or
  • Up to four 24-fibre MTP/MPO rear connections across four cassettes.
Cassette arrangement Physical cassettes Rear connections Total capacity
Two 12-fibre connections per cassette 4 Up to 8 × 12-fibre 96 fibres
One 24-fibre connection per cassette 4 Up to 4 × 24-fibre 96 fibres

Importantly, the enclosure accepts four physical cassette modules rather than eight. However, each cassette can provide two 12-fibre rear interfaces. Consequently, four cassettes can collectively accommodate eight 12-fibre trunk connections.

Alternatively, customers can use four cassettes with one 24-fibre rear connection on each module. Therefore, the enclosure can be aligned with either 12-fibre or 24-fibre trunk infrastructure.

Anderson Corporation can help customers select the most appropriate arrangement. In particular, we can match the cassette configuration to the trunk fibre count, connector system, polarity and required front presentation.

Plug-and-Play Fibre Deployment

Traditional fibre installation may involve cable preparation, splicing and field termination. By comparison, the RapidConnect MTP/MPO system uses factory-terminated trunk cables and cassette modules.

First, the enclosure is mounted in the rack. Next, the selected cassettes are installed in the available module positions. The trunk connectors then connect at the rear, while conventional patch leads connect at the front.

Therefore, the system can reduce the amount of field termination required at the rack. Furthermore, factory-terminated components can improve consistency across multiple links or locations. As a result, customers can achieve a more predictable installation process.

Plug-and-play deployment can provide:

  • Faster physical installation
  • Less field termination
  • Reduced installation complexity
  • More predictable project scheduling
  • Consistent connectorised interfaces
  • Easier capacity expansion
  • Faster network changes
  • Less disruption during upgrades

Nevertheless, every optical connector should still be inspected and cleaned before connection. Additionally, the completed links should be tested after installation. Therefore, plug-and-play construction simplifies deployment without removing essential inspection, cleaning and commissioning requirements.

Compatible MTP/MPO Cassettes

The enclosure uses modular MTP/MPO cassettes designed for the E196P enclosure. Each cassette converts a multi-fibre rear connection into conventional front-facing fibre ports.

Therefore, the cassette forms the optical transition between the backbone trunk and the equipment patching. Moreover, its modular construction allows customers to add capacity without replacing the complete enclosure.

Depending on the selected configuration, cassette options can include:

  • MTP® Elite rear connectivity
  • Low-loss MPO rear connectivity
  • Two 12-fibre rear connections
  • One 24-fibre rear connection
  • LC front connectivity
  • SC front connectivity
  • Singlemode fibre
  • Multimode fibre
  • Polarity matched to the intended channel

Because the cassettes are modular, customers can build the enclosure around their required capacity. Furthermore, compatible modules can be added as additional network links are commissioned.

However, every cassette must remain compatible with the connected trunks and patch leads. Therefore, fibre type, connector platform, polarity and front presentation should be confirmed before ordering.

MTP® Elite Connectivity

MTP® is a high-performance MPO connector manufactured by US Conec. Therefore, MTP® Elite cassette configurations are suitable for customers who specifically require premium MTP connectivity.

MTP® Elite systems can support:

  • High-density fibre infrastructure
  • Low-loss optical connections
  • Factory-terminated network links
  • Data centre backbone connections
  • Enterprise fibre backbones
  • Repeatable modular configurations
  • Networks standardised around MTP components

The enclosure can be fitted with MTP® Elite cassettes and connected to a matching RapidConnect MTP Trunk Cable.

However, the connector brand alone does not define the complete system. In addition, the fibre count, connector gender, polarity and fibre type must remain compatible across the channel. Therefore, Anderson Corporation coordinates these details when preparing the enclosure and its associated cable assemblies.

Low-Loss MPO Connectivity

The enclosure can also use cassette modules fitted with low-loss MPO connectors. Consequently, customers can create a modular system based on compatible MPO cassettes and trunk cables.

Low-loss MPO configurations are suitable for:

  • Data centre backbone links
  • Enterprise networks
  • Telecommunications infrastructure
  • Equipment interconnections
  • High-density cross-connects
  • Network upgrades
  • Structured cabling systems

The selected cassette connects to a compatible RapidConnect MPO Trunk Cable.

Again, the cassette and trunk must be specified as a coordinated system. Therefore, the connector type, fibre count, gender, polarity and fibre mode should be confirmed before manufacturing. As a result, customers receive components designed to connect and operate together.

Choosing Between MTP and MPO

MTP and MPO connectors belong to the same multi-fibre connector family. However, they represent different product options.

MTP® is a specialised MPO connector manufactured by US Conec. Meanwhile, MPO refers to the wider standards-based multi-fibre interface. Therefore, customers should select the connector platform that matches their technical requirements and existing network infrastructure.

The enclosure itself can support either platform through the selected cassette. Consequently, customers can choose:

  • MTP® Elite cassettes with compatible MTP trunk cables; or
  • Low-loss MPO cassettes with compatible MPO trunk cables.

Anderson Corporation can help determine the most appropriate option. In particular, we can review the existing network, optical-loss requirements, connector standard and intended application. Therefore, customers do not need to make this selection without technical support.

LC or SC Front Connectivity

Compatible cassette modules can present LC or SC connections at the front of the enclosure. Therefore, the enclosure can connect the multi-fibre backbone to a range of conventional patch leads and equipment interfaces.

LC connectivity is particularly suitable for high-density installations. Because LC connectors have a compact format, they allow more fibres to be presented within limited panel space. Consequently, LC is commonly selected for complete 96-fibre configurations.

SC connectivity may suit networks that already use SC patch leads or equipment interfaces. Therefore, SC cassette options can help integrate the enclosure into established cabling infrastructure.

Before selecting the front connector format, consider:

  • Existing equipment interfaces
  • Patch lead connector types
  • Required port density
  • Singlemode or multimode fibre
  • UPC or APC requirements
  • Current network standards
  • Future equipment upgrades
  • Available cable management

The front ports should match the connected equipment and patch leads. Otherwise, additional adaptors or replacement cables may be required. Therefore, connector selection should form part of the overall channel design.

Singlemode Fibre Configurations

The enclosure can support singlemode cassette and trunk cable systems. Therefore, it is suitable for networks that require longer transmission distances or compatibility with singlemode optical equipment.

Singlemode configurations may support:

  • Campus backbone connections
  • Telecommunications links
  • Building-to-building networks
  • Data centre interconnections
  • Enterprise backbone infrastructure
  • Longer-distance equipment links

However, every component must support the selected singlemode fibre. In particular, the cassettes, trunks, patch leads and optical equipment must remain compatible. Furthermore, connector polish types must match throughout the channel.

Anderson Corporation can configure the enclosure with the required singlemode cassettes and trunk cables. Consequently, customers receive a coordinated solution designed around their application.

Multimode Fibre Configurations

The enclosure can also support multimode cassette and trunk cable systems. As a result, it is suitable for compatible short-distance data centre and enterprise applications.

Multimode configurations may support:

  • Data centre equipment connections
  • Inter-rack links
  • Enterprise equipment rooms
  • Storage network connections
  • Switch-to-switch links
  • Short-distance backbone links

OM3 and OM4 configurations can be supplied according to the intended application. However, the selected fibre type must remain consistent across the complete optical channel.

Therefore, customers should confirm the required transmission standard, distance and transceiver type. Anderson Corporation can then configure the enclosure, cassettes and trunks accordingly.

Bend-Insensitive Fibre

RapidConnect cassette modules use bend-insensitive fibre. Therefore, they are well suited to compact and high-density network environments.

Each cassette contains multiple fibres within a restricted internal space. Consequently, controlled fibre routing remains important. Although bend-insensitive fibre provides additional protection against bend-related loss, it does not remove minimum bend-radius requirements.

Bend-insensitive fibre offers advantages in:

  • Compact cassette modules
  • High-density rack installations
  • Restricted communications cabinets
  • Crowded fibre pathways
  • Environments with frequent network changes

Nevertheless, installers should route every fibre carefully. Furthermore, patch leads and trunks should never be sharply bent, twisted or compressed. As a result, careful installation helps protect both immediate and long-term optical performance.

Removable Front Protective Cover

The enclosure includes a removable front protective cover. Therefore, technicians can access the patching area during installation, inspection and network changes.

Once patching is complete, the cover helps protect the front interfaces from accidental contact. Moreover, it supports an organised appearance within the rack.

The removable cover assists with:

  • Initial patch lead installation
  • Connector inspection
  • Port identification
  • Routine maintenance
  • Equipment changes
  • Fault investigation
  • Patch lead replacement
  • Network expansion

However, patch leads must be routed correctly before the cover is refitted. In particular, the cover should not compress the leads or force them into tight bends. Therefore, suitable front cable management should support the leads as they leave the enclosure.

Protected Rear Cable Entry

MTP/MPO trunk cables connect to the cassette modules from the rear. Therefore, the enclosure includes protected rear cable-entry points.

The entry protection helps prevent cable jackets from rubbing against exposed enclosure edges. Additionally, multiple cable tie-down points allow incoming trunks to be secured before they connect to the cassettes.

Correct rear cable management can:

  • Protect incoming trunk cables
  • Maintain cable bend radius
  • Reduce connector loading
  • Organise service loops
  • Improve maintenance access
  • Simplify cable identification
  • Support long-term reliability

However, cable ties should not be overtightened. Otherwise, excessive pressure may deform the cable or place stress on the fibres. Therefore, installers should apply only enough restraint to secure each trunk.

Front Fibre Management

A fully populated enclosure can present up to 96 fibres at the front of the rack. Consequently, suitable patch lead management is essential.

Horizontal or vertical cable managers should guide patch leads away from the enclosure. In addition, the routing system should maintain the required bend radius and keep port labels visible.

Effective front fibre management helps:

  • Protect connector interfaces
  • Reduce rack congestion
  • Maintain bend radius
  • Improve port visibility
  • Simplify circuit tracing
  • Reduce accidental disconnection
  • Support future network changes
  • Improve the overall rack layout

By contrast, storing excessive patch lead slack directly in front of the enclosure can restrict access. Therefore, excess length should be managed through the rack’s designated pathways. As a result, technicians can reach the required ports without disturbing unrelated connections.

Rear Trunk Management

Rear trunk cables should be routed and secured before they connect to the cassettes. As a result, cable movement will be less likely to transfer force to the multi-fibre connectors.

A suitable rear layout should account for:

  • Trunk entry direction
  • Rack depth
  • Rear clearance
  • Cable bend radius
  • Service loop position
  • Cable tie-down points
  • Trunk identification
  • Future cassette access

Furthermore, each trunk should be clearly labelled at both ends. Consequently, technicians can identify the correct route without disconnecting unrelated cables. In addition, service loops should remain accessible without obstructing other rack equipment.

Scalable Network Expansion

The modular cassette design allows customers to expand the enclosure progressively. Therefore, the initial installation can reflect current demand without preventing future growth.

For example, an organisation may begin with one 24-fibre cassette. Later, it can add a second cassette to reach 48 fibres. Subsequently, third and fourth modules can increase capacity to 72 and 96 fibres.

This staged approach can help customers:

  • Match capacity to current demand
  • Reserve space for future links
  • Reduce initial equipment requirements
  • Standardise enclosure platforms
  • Support phased project delivery
  • Simplify later upgrades

However, future expansion should be considered during the initial design. Therefore, spare trunk capacity, cassette compatibility and cable management should be planned in advance. Consequently, later upgrades can proceed with fewer changes to the original installation.

Simplified Moves, Adds and Changes

Network infrastructure changes as new equipment and services are introduced. Therefore, fibre systems must support efficient moves, adds and changes.

The RapidConnect enclosure separates the permanent trunk connection at the rear from equipment patching at the front. Consequently, technicians can change many front connections without disturbing the backbone trunk.

The modular design supports:

  • Adding equipment connections
  • Increasing fibre capacity
  • Changing patch lead routes
  • Replacing individual patch leads
  • Adding cassette modules
  • Migrating network services
  • Supporting equipment upgrades
  • Reconfiguring rack layouts

Furthermore, the modular cassettes remain individually accessible. As a result, technicians can work on a particular module without replacing the complete enclosure.

Data Centre Applications

Data centres require high-density fibre infrastructure that can be installed consistently and managed efficiently. Therefore, the 96 Fibre MTP/MPO Enclosure is well suited to backbone and equipment connections across the data centre.

Potential applications include:

  • Main distribution areas
  • Horizontal distribution areas
  • Equipment distribution areas
  • Inter-rack connections
  • Switch-to-switch links
  • Storage network connections
  • Meet-me rooms
  • Colocation environments
  • Data hall expansions

Because the system uses factory-terminated components, it can support faster physical deployment. Moreover, standardised enclosure and cassette configurations can improve consistency across multiple racks. As a result, both initial installation and future expansion become easier to manage.

Enterprise Network Applications

Enterprise networks often require structured fibre connections between buildings, floors and communications rooms. Therefore, the enclosure can provide a central transition between high-fibre-count trunks and conventional equipment patching.

Typical enterprise applications include:

  • Campus backbone networks
  • Building-to-building links
  • Main communications rooms
  • Floor distribution rooms
  • Private data centres
  • Corporate network upgrades
  • Disaster recovery infrastructure
  • Equipment room expansions

Furthermore, the modular design allows organisations to standardise one enclosure platform across multiple locations. Consequently, installation, expansion and maintenance processes can become more consistent. In addition, spare cassette positions can provide a planned path for future growth.

Telecommunications Applications

Telecommunications facilities frequently need high fibre density within restricted rack space. Therefore, the E196P can provide an efficient transition between multi-fibre trunks and equipment-facing connections.

The enclosure can support:

  • Network aggregation
  • Transport equipment connectivity
  • Fibre distribution
  • Equipment interconnection
  • Facility expansions
  • High-density cross-connects

Additionally, the front-facing LC or SC ports allow individual circuits to remain accessible. Consequently, technicians can patch or inspect a specific connection without disturbing the main rear trunk.

Optical Polarity

MTP and MPO systems must route each fibre to the correct position at the opposite end of the channel. Therefore, polarity must be confirmed before the trunk cables and cassettes are manufactured.

The complete design may need to account for:

  • Polarity method
  • Connector gender
  • Connector key orientation
  • Cassette fibre mapping
  • Trunk construction
  • Patch lead orientation
  • Equipment transmit positions
  • Equipment receive positions

Although two components may physically connect, they may not provide the required fibre mapping. Therefore, compatibility should never be assumed from the connector shape alone.

Anderson Corporation can coordinate polarity across the complete link. As a result, the enclosure, cassettes and trunk cables can be supplied as a matched system. Furthermore, this coordinated approach can simplify installation and commissioning.

Connector Gender and Key Orientation

MTP and MPO connections may use pinned or unpinned interfaces. Furthermore, connector key orientation forms part of the system’s polarity design.

Therefore, customers should confirm:

  • Connector gender at each end
  • Required pinning arrangement
  • Key-up or key-down orientation
  • Cassette interface requirements
  • Trunk connector configuration
  • Connected equipment requirements

If these details are not yet known, Anderson Corporation can review the intended link. Consequently, customers do not need to finalise the configuration without technical support.

Connector Inspection and Cleaning

Clean connector end faces are essential for reliable fibre performance. In particular, MTP and MPO connectors place multiple fibre end faces within a single ferrule.

Therefore, one contaminated connector may affect several channels. For example, dust or oil can increase insertion loss across multiple fibres. Consequently, connector inspection should form part of every installation and maintenance procedure.

A recommended process is:

  1. First, inspect the connector end face.
  2. Next, clean the connector when contamination is present.
  3. Then, inspect the connector again.
  4. Finally, connect it promptly after confirming cleanliness.

The RapidConnect MTP/MPO One-Click Cleaner provides a convenient cleaning option for compatible connectors.

However, cleaning should not replace inspection. Instead, inspection and cleaning should work together. As a result, technicians can confirm that the end face is clean before making the connection.

Installation Planning

Careful planning helps create a reliable and accessible installation. Therefore, the rack layout, cassette arrangement and trunk routes should be confirmed before work begins.

Before installation:

  • Confirm that one rack unit is available.
  • Check the required rear clearance.
  • Confirm the number of cassette modules.
  • Select MTP® Elite or low-loss MPO connectivity.
  • Confirm the required fibre type.
  • Select the front connector format.
  • Verify the trunk fibre count.
  • Confirm connector gender and polarity.
  • Prepare the port-labelling schedule.
  • Confirm front and rear cable management.

In addition, installers should confirm that every delivered component matches the project schedule. Consequently, configuration issues can be identified before the enclosure is mounted.

Installing the Enclosure

First, mount the enclosure securely within the allocated rack position. Next, install the cassette modules in their designated positions.

The trunks can then be routed through the protected rear entries. Afterwards, each cable should be secured at the available tie-down points before connecting to the cassette.

During installation:

  • Maintain the required cable bend radius.
  • Avoid twisting the trunk cables.
  • Secure cables without overtightening.
  • Inspect and clean every optical interface.
  • Connect each trunk to the correct cassette.
  • Route patch leads through suitable cable managers.
  • Apply the required port and cable labels.
  • Keep service loops accessible.

Finally, check that the front cover can be installed without compressing the patch leads. Additionally, verify that rear access remains available for future maintenance. As a result, the completed installation will remain both protected and accessible.

Testing and Commissioning

RapidConnect trunks and cassettes are factory terminated and tested. Nevertheless, the completed optical channel should also be tested after installation.

Testing may include:

  • Fibre continuity
  • End-to-end fibre identification
  • Polarity verification
  • Insertion-loss measurement
  • Optical return-loss testing where required
  • OTDR testing where appropriate
  • Equipment-level application testing
  • Connector inspection records

The total link-loss budget should include every connection within the channel. Therefore, the calculation should account for trunks, cassettes, patch leads and any additional interfaces.

Furthermore, test results should be recorded against the corresponding enclosure ports. Consequently, future maintenance teams will have a reliable performance reference for each circuit.

Labelling and Documentation

Clear identification is particularly important in a 96-fibre enclosure. Therefore, each cassette, front port and trunk cable should receive a unique label.

Documentation should record:

  • Enclosure identification
  • Rack position
  • Cassette position
  • Front port number
  • Trunk cable identification
  • Remote termination point
  • Fibre type
  • Connector type
  • Polarity method
  • Test results
  • Installation date

Moreover, network records should be updated whenever connections change. As a result, future fault-finding and expansion work can proceed more efficiently. In addition, accurate documentation reduces the risk of technicians disturbing the wrong circuit.
