12 Fibre MTP/MPO Cassette

The 12 Fibre MTP/MPO Cassette converts one rear 12-fibre MTP® Elite or low-loss MPO connection into 12 accessible LC fibre connections. At the front, the cassette accepts three Quad LC adaptors, while each adaptor provides four individual LC connections. Therefore, every cassette supports 12 fibres within a compact modular format.

Designed specifically for the RapidConnect E1144P enclosure, the cassette supports efficient structured fibre deployment without field splicing. Moreover, its internal fibre assemblies arrive factory terminated and tested. As a result, installers can establish reliable rack connectivity using compatible plug-and-play components.

The cassette supports singlemode and multimode fibre configurations. In addition, Anderson Corporation can configure the connector platform, polarity and fibre mapping to match the corresponding trunk cable and complete optical channel.

What Is a 12 Fibre MTP/MPO Cassette?

A 12 Fibre MTP/MPO Cassette is a modular conversion unit for high-density structured fibre systems. At the rear, one MTP® Elite or low-loss MPO connection carries 12 fibres into the cassette. Meanwhile, three Quad LC adaptors present the same 12 fibres at the front.

Internally, a factory-terminated assembly maps each position in the rear multifibre connector to its corresponding LC connection. Therefore, installers do not need to splice the incoming trunk or terminate individual connectors inside the rack.

The cassette body also protects the internal fibre transition. Consequently, technicians interact primarily with the front LC connections and rear MTP/MPO interface during installation, testing and maintenance.

In summary, the cassette provides:

  • One rear 12-fibre MTP® Elite or low-loss MPO connection
  • Three front Quad LC adaptors
  • Four LC connections per Quad LC adaptor
  • Twelve front LC fibre connections
  • A total capacity of 12 fibres
  • Factory-terminated internal fibre assemblies
  • Singlemode and multimode options
  • Project-specific polarity configurations
  • Compatibility with the E1144P enclosure
  • Modular plug-and-play installation
  • Protected internal fibre management

Three Quad LC Adaptors Provide 12 LC Connections

Each cassette accepts three Quad LC adaptors. Because every Quad LC adaptor contains four individual LC connection positions, the cassette presents 12 LC fibre connections at the front.

Importantly, the cassette accepts Quad LC adaptors only. Therefore, alternative LC adaptor formats should not be specified for this product.

Cassette component Quantity
Quad LC adaptors 3
LC connections per Quad LC adaptor 4
Total front LC connections 12
Rear MTP/MPO connections 1
Total fibre capacity 12 fibres

The Quad LC format keeps all 12 LC connections organised within a compact cassette body. Moreover, it creates a clear relationship between the rear 12-fibre interface and the 12 front connection positions.

At the front, technicians connect suitable LC patch leads to the three Quad LC adaptors. Meanwhile, the rear MTP/MPO interface connects to the corresponding multifibre trunk cable. As a result, the cassette provides a simple transition between high-density backbone cabling and accessible LC equipment connections.

Designed Specifically for the E1144P Enclosure

The cassette has been designed specifically for the RapidConnect 144 Fibre MTP/MPO Enclosure. Therefore, its dimensions, mounting format and connection layout match the E1144P platform.

The E1144P enclosure supports up to 12 individual 12-fibre cassettes. Consequently, a fully populated enclosure can present up to 144 LC fibre connections within 1RU.

E1144P configuration Maximum capacity
12-fibre cassettes 12
Quad LC adaptors per cassette 3
Total Quad LC adaptors 36
LC connections per cassette 12
Total LC fibre connections 144
Rack space 1RU

The modular arrangement also supports staged deployment. For example, customers can install only the cassettes required for their initial capacity. Later, additional cassettes can be added as network demand increases.

However, the 12 Fibre MTP/MPO Cassette is not a universal module for unrelated enclosures. Instead, its physical compatibility applies specifically to the E1144P enclosure. Therefore, customers should confirm the enclosure model, cassette quantity and required fibre capacity before ordering.

How the 12 Fibre Cassette Works

The cassette creates a protected transition between multifibre trunk connectivity and individual LC connections. First, the 12-fibre trunk connects to the MTP® Elite or low-loss MPO interface at the rear. Next, the internal fibre assembly routes each fibre to its assigned LC position. Finally, three Quad LC adaptors present all 12 fibres at the front.

This arrangement simplifies rack installation because technicians do not need to access the cassette’s internal fibres. Instead, the cassette remains a self-contained module throughout normal deployment and operation.

The fibre path follows four principal stages:

  1. One 12-fibre MTP or MPO trunk connects at the rear.
  2. The factory-terminated internal assembly separates and routes the 12 fibres.
  3. Three Quad LC adaptors present the fibres at the front.
  4. LC patch leads connect the cassette to the required equipment or patching field.

Because the internal transition remains enclosed, the fibres receive protection from routine rack activity. Furthermore, controlled routing helps maintain appropriate bend management inside the cassette.

MTP® Elite and Low-Loss MPO Options

The cassette can be supplied with either an MTP® Elite or low-loss MPO rear connection. Although both connector platforms use a related multifibre format, the selected interface must match the trunk cable and complete channel design.

Therefore, every quotation should clearly identify whether the project requires MTP® Elite or low-loss MPO connectivity. In addition, customers should specify the required gender, key orientation and polarity.

MTP® Elite Cassette Configuration

MTP® is a precision multifibre connector platform manufactured by US Conec. In particular, the MTP® Elite option supports network designs that specify MTP connectivity and controlled low-loss performance.

Therefore, an MTP® Elite cassette should connect to a compatible MTP Trunk Cable. Moreover, using the correct connector platform throughout the channel supports mechanical compatibility and predictable optical performance.

However, selecting MTP® Elite does not complete the specification. Customers must also confirm the fibre type, connector gender, key orientation and polarity method. Otherwise, visually similar components may not create the required fibre path.

Low-Loss MPO Cassette Configuration

The low-loss MPO option supports networks designed around MPO connectivity. In this configuration, the rear cassette interface connects to a compatible MPO Trunk Cable.

Again, the cassette and trunk must use compatible configurations. Therefore, fibre type, connector gender, key orientation and polarity should be confirmed before production.

Why the Connector Platform Matters

MTP and MPO should not be treated as interchangeable ordering descriptions. Instead, customers should identify the exact platform required for the project.

Clear identification helps prevent:

  • Incorrect rear connector selection
  • Connector gender mismatches
  • Incorrect key orientation
  • Polarity problems
  • Incompatible channel components
  • Installation and commissioning delays

Anderson Corporation can review the cassette and trunk requirements together. Consequently, the supplied components can form one coordinated structured fibre system.

Plug-and-Play Fibre Deployment

Traditional fibre deployment may require cable preparation, splicing, connector termination and extensive site work. By contrast, the 12 Fibre MTP/MPO Cassette uses factory-terminated components to create a modular plug-and-play link.

During installation, the technician secures the cassette within the E1144P enclosure. Next, the compatible MTP or MPO trunk connects at the rear. Finally, suitable LC patch leads connect to the three Quad LC adaptors at the front.

The principal installation sequence is:

  1. Confirm the approved fibre channel design.
  2. Verify the cassette’s fibre type and connector platform.
  3. Check the required polarity and connector gender.
  4. Install the cassette into the E1144P enclosure.
  5. Route and support the trunk cable correctly.
  6. Inspect and clean the rear multifibre interfaces.
  7. Connect the MTP or MPO trunk to the cassette.
  8. Inspect and clean the front LC interfaces.
  9. Connect the required LC patch leads.
  10. Test and document the completed channel.

As a result, the cassette reduces the amount of specialist termination work required inside the rack. Moreover, it supports a consistent connection layout across multiple cabinets, equipment rooms or data centre rows.

However, plug-and-play installation does not remove the need for accurate system design. Fibre type, connector platform, gender, key orientation and polarity must still match. Likewise, technicians must follow correct inspection, cleaning, handling and testing procedures.

Polarity Across the Complete Fibre Channel

Polarity determines how each transmitting fibre reaches the corresponding receiving interface at the opposite end of the channel. Therefore, correct polarity depends on every component within the fibre path.

A cassette-based channel may include:

  • Transmitting equipment
  • LC equipment patch leads
  • The first 12-fibre cassette
  • The MTP or MPO trunk cable
  • The second 12-fibre cassette
  • LC equipment patch leads at the far end
  • Receiving equipment

The internal mapping within each cassette forms only one part of this path. Consequently, technicians should never select cassette polarity without considering the trunk cable, opposite cassette and equipment interfaces.

MTP/MPO systems commonly use Type A, Type B or Type C polarity methods. However, the correct method depends on the complete channel architecture. Therefore, the design should identify the polarity method before the cassettes and trunks enter production.

Before ordering, customers should confirm:

  • Rear connector platform
  • Connector gender
  • Key orientation
  • Fibre type
  • Required polarity method
  • Cassette fibre mapping
  • Trunk cable construction
  • LC connector configuration
  • LC connector polish
  • Equipment interfaces at both ends

Anderson Corporation can configure the cassettes and trunk cables as a matched system. As a result, installers receive components designed around the intended end-to-end fibre path.

Singlemode Fibre Configurations

Singlemode fibre supports long-distance transmission and a wide range of network speeds. Therefore, singlemode cassette configurations suit many enterprise, data centre, campus and telecommunications applications.

Common applications include:

  • Data centre interconnections
  • Campus backbone networks
  • Telecommunications links
  • Carrier infrastructure
  • Enterprise backbone connections
  • Equipment-room connections
  • High-speed optical transport systems

The connector polish must also match the channel design. For example, UPC and APC interfaces use different ferrule geometries. Consequently, they should not be directly mated.

Therefore, customers should specify the required LC connector polish when requesting a quotation. In addition, the trunk cable, cassettes and connected components must use compatible interfaces.

Multimode Fibre Configurations

Multimode fibre commonly supports high-speed connections within data centres, equipment rooms and enterprise facilities. In particular, OM4 fibre can support multiple applications over distances determined by the selected transceivers and network standard.

However, fibre category remains important. OM3 and OM4 should not be treated as identical simply because both use multimode connectivity. Instead, designers should confirm the required fibre category across the complete channel.

Relevant design considerations include:

  • Required network speed
  • Application standard
  • Transceiver type
  • Total channel distance
  • Connector loss allowance
  • Fibre category
  • Existing infrastructure compatibility

The internal cassette fibre must match the trunk cable and connected patch leads. Otherwise, the completed channel may not provide the expected optical performance.

Bend-Insensitive Internal Fibre

The cassette uses bend-insensitive fibre to support controlled routing within its compact body. Consequently, the internal fibres can follow the designed path while maintaining stable optical performance.

This construction is particularly valuable because 12 fibres must transition from one rear multifibre interface to three Quad LC adaptors. Therefore, the cassette controls this transition within a protected enclosure.

However, bend-insensitive fibre does not permit careless handling. Technicians must still protect the cassette and connected cables from:

  • Crushing
  • Impact
  • Excessive pulling tension
  • Twisting
  • Unsupported cable weight
  • Tight external bends
  • Contaminated connector interfaces

Correct handling remains essential throughout delivery, installation and ongoing maintenance. Likewise, the connected trunk and LC patch leads must remain within their specified bend-radius limits.

Managing the Optical Loss Budget

Every mated connector pair contributes insertion loss to an optical channel. Therefore, the cassette and its associated connections must be included in the complete link-loss calculation.

A cassette-based channel may contain:

  • LC connections at the transmitting equipment
  • LC connections at the first cassette
  • The rear MTP/MPO connection at the first cassette
  • The MTP or MPO trunk cable
  • The rear MTP/MPO connection at the second cassette
  • LC connections at the second cassette
  • LC connections at the receiving equipment

The exact configuration may vary. Nevertheless, designers should account for every connection and the attenuation of the fibre itself.

Low-loss MTP® Elite or MPO connectivity can help preserve the available optical margin. However, individual component specifications do not replace channel-level testing. Therefore, installers should test the completed channel against the approved project limit.

Moreover, test results should be recorded and retained. As a result, network operators gain a reliable commissioning baseline for future maintenance and troubleshooting.

Suitable Applications

The 12 Fibre MTP/MPO Cassette suits structured cabling systems that require 12 accessible LC connections from one 12-fibre trunk interface.

Common applications include:

  • Data centres
  • Enterprise equipment rooms
  • Telecommunications facilities
  • Campus backbone networks
  • Storage networks
  • Colocation facilities
  • High-density cross-connect areas
  • Modular network expansions
  • Equipment migrations
  • Moves, adds and changes

The cassette is particularly suitable when a project requires capacity in 12-fibre increments. Therefore, customers can stage their deployment without populating every E1144P cassette position immediately.

However, designers should first confirm that an MTP/MPO-to-LC cassette architecture suits the intended application. Some parallel-optic systems require direct multifibre connectivity instead. Consequently, the active equipment interfaces must form part of the initial system assessment.

Benefits of a Modular Cassette System

Faster On-Site Installation

The cassette removes field splicing and individual connector termination from the principal installation process. Therefore, technicians can establish rack connectivity more efficiently.

Three Quad LC Adaptors

Each cassette accepts three Quad LC adaptors. Consequently, the cassette front provides 12 clearly organised LC fibre connections.

Consistent Fibre Mapping

The internal assembly is terminated under controlled factory conditions. As a result, fibre mapping can remain consistent across multiple cassettes produced for the same project.

Protected Internal Fibres

The cassette body encloses the internal fibre transition. Therefore, the fibres remain protected from routine patching and rack activity.

Modular Capacity Expansion

Customers can install additional cassettes as network requirements grow. Consequently, the E1144P enclosure supports staged capacity deployment in 12-fibre increments.

Accessible LC Connectivity

The Quad LC adaptors provide familiar LC interfaces at the cassette front. As a result, technicians can connect equipment and patching fields without accessing the internal assembly.

Simplified Component Replacement

A cassette can be removed and replaced as one module when required. However, technicians must first isolate the affected connections, verify the replacement configuration and update the network records.

Cassette Selection Checklist

Before requesting a quotation, customers should confirm the complete cassette and channel configuration.

Selection requirement Information to confirm
Compatible enclosure RapidConnect E1144P
Cassette capacity 12 fibres
Front adaptor format 3 × Quad LC adaptors
Front LC connections 12
Rear connector MTP® Elite or low-loss MPO
Fibre type Singlemode or multimode

Connector gender Male or female as required
Key orientation As required by the channel
Trunk cable length Project-specific
Cassette quantity Based on present and future capacity
Labelling Project-specific identification
Testing Project and commissioning requirements

Clear ordering information helps prevent connector and polarity mismatches. Moreover, it allows the cassette, trunk cable and enclosure to be configured as one coordinated solution.

If some details remain uncertain, Anderson Corporation can review the application before production. Consequently, customers do not need to resolve complex MTP/MPO configurations without technical support.

Planning E1144P Cassette Capacity

The E1144P enclosure supports up to 12 individual 12-fibre cassettes. Therefore, designers can plan capacity in 12-fibre increments.

Installed cassettes Quad LC adaptors LC fibre connections
1 3 12
2 6 24
3 9 36
4 12 48
5 15 60
6 18 72
7 21 84
8 24 96
9 27 108
10 30 120
11 33 132
12 36 144

This incremental structure makes enclosure capacity straightforward to calculate. For example, an installation requiring 72 LC fibre connections needs six cassettes. Likewise, a fully populated enclosure requires 12 cassettes and contains 36 Quad LC adaptors.

Designers should also consider future growth. Therefore, unused cassette positions can provide an expansion path without immediately installing another rack-mounted enclosure.

However, unused enclosure space should remain protected and properly managed. Furthermore, future cassettes must match the established fibre type, connector platform and polarity design.

Installation Guidance

Before installation, compare the cassette identification with the approved rack elevation, trunk schedule and channel design. In addition, confirm that the cassette matches the fibre type, connector platform and polarity required at that location.

Handle the cassette by its body. Likewise, avoid placing pressure on the rear connector or front Quad LC adaptors.

The trunk cable should be routed and supported so that its weight does not transfer to the cassette interface. Moreover, the cable must remain within its specified bend-radius and pulling-tension limits.

Recommended installation practices include:

  • Verify the cassette before placing it into the enclosure.
  • Keep protective caps fitted until inspection and connection.
  • Support the trunk independently from the cassette.
  • Avoid twisting the rear multifibre connector.
  • Maintain the specified cable bend radius.
  • Use the enclosure’s cable-management provisions.
  • Avoid overtightening cable restraints.
  • Label the cassette and LC connection positions.
  • Update the fibre schedule after installation.
  • Test the completed channel before activation.

Correct documentation is also essential. Therefore, cassette positions, Quad LC adaptors, trunk destinations and LC connection assignments should appear in the final network records.

Connector Inspection and Cleaning

Connector contamination remains one of the most common causes of unexpected optical loss. Because one MTP or MPO interface carries 12 fibres, contamination at the rear connector can affect several fibre paths simultaneously.

Therefore, technicians should follow an inspect-clean-inspect-connect process:

  1. Remove the protective cap.
  2. Inspect the connector end face.
  3. Clean the interface when required.
  4. Inspect the end face again.
  5. Connect only after confirming cleanliness.

The cleaning tool must suit the connector being cleaned. For example, the rear MTP/MPO interface requires a compatible multifibre cleaning tool. Meanwhile, the front LC interfaces require a cleaner designed for LC connectors.

Importantly, a dust cap does not guarantee a clean connector. Dust caps can contain contamination or transfer residue to a ferrule. Therefore, technicians should inspect every interface before connection.

Unused LC positions should remain protected. Similarly, the rear MTP/MPO interface should remain capped until the trunk is ready for connection.

For a compatible cleaning solution, view the RapidConnect MTP/MPO One Click Cleaner.

Maintenance and Network Changes

The cassette supports structured moves, adds and changes because its LC interfaces remain accessible at the enclosure front. However, technicians should follow controlled change procedures to protect network availability and fibre integrity.

Before moving an LC connection:

  • Confirm the correct cassette and Quad LC adaptor.
  • Identify the affected service.
  • Record the existing connection position.
  • Inspect and clean the replacement interface.
  • Route the patch lead without obstructing nearby connections.
  • Test the changed fibre path.
  • Update the network documentation.

Technicians should also inspect the cassette, labels and cable support during planned maintenance. For example, a loose trunk may transfer mechanical load to the rear connector. Likewise, poorly routed patch leads may restrict access to the adjacent Quad LC adaptors.

Therefore, effective maintenance involves more than connector cleaning. It also requires orderly routing, accurate identification and current network records.

Testing the Completed Fibre Channel

Factory testing verifies the cassette assembly before delivery. Nevertheless, installation testing remains necessary because transport, handling, contamination and final connection quality can affect the completed channel.

Depending on the project, testing may include:

  • Connector end-face inspection
  • Continuity verification
  • Fibre mapping verification
  • Polarity verification
  • Insertion-loss testing
  • Optical return-loss testing
  • OTDR testing where appropriate
  • End-to-end channel certification
  • Results recording and asset documentation

A visible light source can assist with basic continuity checks. However, it does not replace calibrated insertion-loss testing or detailed polarity verification.

Test leads and reference interfaces must also match the connector platform. Therefore, technicians should plan the test method before installation begins.

When recording results, identify:

  • Enclosure
  • Cassette position
  • Quad LC adaptor
  • LC connection position
  • Trunk destination
  • Fibre number
  • Test direction
  • Measured result
  • Approved project limit

Detailed records make later troubleshooting significantly easier. Moreover, they establish an optical performance baseline for the installed system.

12 Fibre Cassette vs 24 Fibre Cassette

Both cassette formats convert multifibre trunk connectivity into individual LC connections. However, they provide different fibre capacities and support different enclosure-planning strategies.

Feature 12 Fibre Cassette 24 Fibre Cassette
Fibre capacity 12 fibres 24 fibres
Rear 12-fibre connections 1 2
Front LC connections 12 24
Capacity increment 12 fibres 24 fibres
Principal selection factor Finer modular expansion Greater capacity per cassette

The 12-fibre cassette provides capacity in smaller increments. Therefore, it can suit staged growth or networks organised around individual 12-fibre trunks.

By comparison, a 24-fibre cassette consolidates more fibre connections within one cassette. However, its suitability depends on the enclosure layout, trunk architecture and required capacity.

Neither configuration is automatically better. Instead, the correct choice depends on:

  • Required fibre capacity
  • Available enclosure positions
  • Number of trunk connections
  • Expansion strategy
  • Port identification requirements
  • Polarity design
  • Fibre type
  • Equipment interfaces

This Authority Hub focuses exclusively on the 12-fibre cassette. Consequently, detailed 24-fibre specifications should remain on the separate 24 Fibre MTP/MPO Cassette Authority Hub.
