Brief Introduction

Do you wonder how the new NBN connection works? Here is a comprehensive guide to help our readers understand everything related to Australia’s National Broadband Network.

How does the NBN Connection work?

Australia’s National Broadband Network (NBN) delivers high-speed internet access to homes and businesses across the country. This government-owned project operates as an open access system, allowing internet service providers to connect and offer high-speed broadband services to customers.

The NBN aims to future-proof Australia’s internet infrastructure by replacing outdated copper networks with high-speed fibre-optic technology. As the internet becomes increasingly vital in both personal and professional life, establishing a faster, sturdier, and more reliable network is essential. This need prompted the Australian government to develop the NBN.

What is NBN?

The NBN or National Broadband Network is the data network project of Australia. The network provides high-speed internet access to homes and businesses in the country. The government owns and operates the project as an open access system for internet service providers. The service providers connect with NBN to provide high-speed broadband services to the customers.

This advanced network is designed to future-proof the internet in Australian businesses and homes. Achieved by replacing the outdated copper infrastructure with a high-speed fiber-optic network. With the internet becoming an integral part of personal as well as work life, it is crucial to establish a faster, sturdier, and reliable network for any country. For this reason, the Australian government has established the network.

Who will get the NBN Connection?

The telecom companies operating across the country are rolling out NBN connections progressively throughout Australia with an aim to connect every user with this network. The goal of NBN is to provide reliable and fast internet access so that every Australian can enjoy the internet as a basic service regardless of their location.

Need for NBN

The previous copper network is insufficient to fulfill the increasing data demands of the country, and the infrastructure is struggling to keep pace with the expanding digital landscape and the need for fast, reliable internet connectivity.

NBN is developed to meet the growing need for high-speed internet and provide reliable data and phone services to every Australian citizen across the country. Access to fast, uninterrupted internet provides the citizens with seamless opportunities in business, education, health care, socializing, and entertainment. The network aims to provide a stable internet across Australia for future needs, facilitating every citizen of the country to be more productive and efficient while staying connected as and when required.

How does the NBN work?

The NBN network uses a range of distinct technologies to provide high-speed internet and voice communication to users across Australia. These technologies include:

  1. Optical Fibre
  2. HFC or Hybrid Fibre Coax (HFC), Pay TV Cable
  3. Satellite
  4. Fixed Wireless

Optical fibre contains thin plastic or glass strands, and data transmission occurs through these strands using light pulses. Optical fibres can transfer data to a longer distance, and hence, most of the NBN connections are made using these cables.

Satellite broadband uses a satellite dish antenna to receive broadband data and transmit to home or offices in areas that are hard to reach. This method of data transmission is used in areas where fixed wireless and optical fiber connections aren’t available. The fixed wireless is a traditional telecommunication technology that sends terrestrial microwave signals from one point to another.

When getting an NBN connection for your home and business, it is important to give careful thought to ensure maximum speed and connectivity are available at all times. Moreover, when renovating a house or setting up a network in a new building, place the cables in the central place of the building to have better connectivity with computers, phones, and other wireless devices.

Types of NBN Connections

The NBN network mostly uses optical fiber technology to provide uninterrupted connectivity across the country. The majority of the NBN network consists of the three types of fiber connections:

  1. Fibre to the Premises or FTTP
  2. Fibre to the Building or FTTB
  3. Fibre to the Node or FTTN

FTTP

Fibre to the Premises or FTTP is an optical fiber NBN connection that runs into the house or small office and terminates on a Network Termination Device supplied by the NBN for terminating the connection. The device allows connecting a maximum of two phone service providers along with four different data providers. The connection can be made using the existing telephone network or a new fiber cable.

FTTB

The Fibre to the Building or FTTB connection provides a fiber installation to an apartment complex or a business building. The connection terminates at the interior node, distributing the broadband service throughout the entire building. Typically, the fibre cable connects to the existing telephone system using a modem.

FTTN

The Fibre to the Node or FTTN is an NBN connection where fiber is connected to a node outside a building or group of houses. They establish the connection to provide broadband services to a small area.

In case the optical fibre connection is not available due to any reason, the NBN network uses Hybrid Fiber coax (HFC), fixed wireless, or a satellite. HFC, commonly known as a Pay TV cable, uses the existing Pay-TV network to provide high-speed broadband services. Using modern technology, broadband and telephone services can be provided through the cable modem.

The NBN network aims to connect at least 93% of the Australian residents with the network and provide them with a data transfer speed of up to 100Mbps. The NBN connection provides an opportunity for Australians to enjoy a reliable and high-speed internet service, regardless of their location. The network aims to provide seamless connectivity to every citizen, whether living in a city or secluded rural area.

To get an NBN connection, home and businesses can choose the internet plans from any of the service providers. The service provider connects to the NBN network to provide fast and reliable data services to the customers.
